THE FIQH DEPARTMENT

In the Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful.
Although every Fiqh opinion is based on evidence, often times, the scholars differ in their views. This room for differences is a mercy from Allah, and as long as there is evidence to support an opinion, then we must respect scholars' views, even if we may not always agree.

Question:

In the name of Allaah, and blessings be upon the messenger of Allaah. There has reached me a notice on the website 'Facebook' informing about a new war waged on the Qur'an. It is about a group of Christians who placed the image of a page of the book of Allaah on toilet paper in effort to avenge (according to them) the Fatwa that permits using the pages of the Torah and Bible as such since they are books not to be respected. So is this fatwa true or is it rejected, and what is the proofs that allow us to discuss with them this issue. Benefit us, May Allaah reward you with good.

Answer:

In the Name of Allaah, the Benevolent, the Merciful All praise belongs to Allaah, and may peace and blessings be upon the messenger of Allaah, and upon his family, companions, and those allied with him. We do not accept the statement that the heavenly books such as the Torah or Gospel can be used to clean oneself with since it contains amidst it some of the words of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. Distortion does not mean complete change, but rather it means additions and subtractions. Then, after that (distortion) there remains some of the words of Allaah existent in these books. Hence, it is not permissible to belittle it altogether in this manner. And consider our stance in sharee'ah with regards to believing or belying... it has come (in Islamic law) that our responsibility is to not to testify to the truth of the people of the book, nor to testify to their falsehood, so as not to call falsehood truth nor call truth falsehood. So as we refrain from believing or belying it because it contains some of the words of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, alongside additions and human distortions, likewise it is not permissible to belittle it altogether for the same reason. This is so not to belittle Allaah's words amidst what we belittle! As for the enmity of some of the foolish to the book of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, in this manner, then Allaah, the Royal and High, will defend His book from those who transgress against it. And Allaah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of our affairs, and Allaah, the Most High, knows best.
